Building a seaweed farm in Lobitos is a versatile solution to a range of political, social, economic, and environmental issues.
Though the arid climate means much of the local land is not suitable for agriculture, the coast of Peru provides ideal conditions for cultivating seaweed, giving Lobitos an extensive reservoir of untapped economic potential, as the protean nature of seaweed makes it a much sought-after raw material in a vast number of different industries.
Once the farm and potential buyers have been established by experts, the simple, relatively self-sustaining nature of the farm means it can be easily run by locals, providing additional employment opportunities with long term guaranteed benefits. The farm itself will be made from locally sourced recycled materials as a means of reducing non-biodegradable waste around the town, as well as making it more cost effective.
