The communities of Lobitos and Piedritas heavily rely on neighbouring cities for the food supply, but at the expense of travel time and increased costs. Agriculture attempts are at a subsistence level due to problems with soil fertility, salinity and irrigation. The Farm-Box provides a fertile farming location that reduces the relative soil salinity by at least 3% and salty groundwater penetration, along with reducing irrigation frequency and water amount by at least 15%. This is achieved by implementing Hydrogel, which is a super absorbent polymer that keeps water and nutrients at the root zone of plants and helps increase the crop yield while reducing water usage. The outcomes of the Sustainable Farm-Box project are a constant food supply that is self-grown, along with saved costs from travel, vegetable purchase by 20% and irrigation by at least 15%. The Farm-Box is a box made out of wood that is placed partially below the soil level and encompasses fertile farming soil within. The construction and finish of the built walls prevents soil erosion from the salty groundwaters, as well as maintain the required environment for the crops to thrive.
